How to Change An Attitude?

Wow, this is a big thing. Most people know they should but they just wouldn’t change. Why bother changing an attitude? It is because this is the only way to adopt successful strategies and be like them.

The real secrets only lie in 6 R’s. Let’s take a look at each one of them.

1. Review
This is the very first step and the most important step. This is the step where you identify your problem in terms of your thinking and behaviour. Often it is easier to take it if you identify the problems yourself rather than a person telling you what you need to do.

So, do a review on your own. What did I do wrong the past week? Which area of my life I did not do well? What was the cause when such problem persisted?

You will be surprised when you identify these problems. Don’t feel bad when you know you are weak in certain areas. All of us is weak in a particular area, as long as we know how we should work on it.

You may ask the people around you if you can take it and you must ask from a credible source. You wouldn’t want to ask how you can become a millionaire from a guy whose profession is cleaning the toilet.

2. Resolve
Now that you have identified your problems and it is time for you to make up your mind and decide firmly that you want to make a change in your attitude.

So how do you do it? Just be serious and committed to it. Adam Khoo reveals the power of taking action within 36 hours and it is one of the most empowering ways to start to do something.

He illustrated if a person wants to start a business, once he has come out with a plan, he will need to start executing the plan within 36 hours. So within the 36 hours, he might need to register a company, get office location brochures and look for employment agencies that will help him to start off his business.

This shows that how serious you are in terms of resolving your attitude.

3. Refrain
At this stage, you know you can always do something about your attitude. What if starting a business does not work or on your way going to gym is so jammed that you failed to register a gym membership within 36 hours?

Find alternatives.

My friends often ask me, “Clement, can you wake up early in the morning to do this and that?”. I replied, “Yes, why not”. “You sure?”, they doubted. I then said, “Yes, it is not that I can or cannot. It is whether I want or not”.

Dennis Waitley says this, “Winners in life think constantly in terms of I can, I will and I am.”

Another friend of mine told me, “Don’t worry, do something”.

4. Re-Enter
This is the ‘one more try’ stage where you re-enter the state of getting things right again. So if you failed to study for 3 hours straight last time you tried, try again this time.

Now the biggest problem is this. How often do you feel motivated in things that you want to do? Once in a lifetime? Do you think successful people are motivated to do whatever they want to do all the time?

Like you, they are merely human beings. The difference that makes the difference is that, they choose to do it anyway.

They do feel overwhelmed when they think about the piles of documents on their desks or the tasks that never seem to be finishing. They choose to do it, without motivation.

The secret is this. When you start to do certain thing without motivation, like most of us do, the motivation will come as you continue to keep doing it.

5. Repeat
Make it a habit. When you change a habit, it requires you to step out of your comfort zone that step into something you have never tried before.

It is not comfortable at first and when you keep doing it for 6 weeks straight, it will become a habit where you feel so comfortable in doing it.

I remember when I first started to adopt the habit of taking morning shower. I felt so uncomfortabel because I needed to wake up 15 minutes earlier every morning and when I got into the bathroom, the warm and hot water made me wanted to go back to sleep so badly.

I forced my way through and eventually today, I cannot start my day without taking a morning shower.

This is a very simple illustration and it did change my habit of taking morning shower. It applies in every area of our lives. Do you not plan for your finance? Start to plan. Do you not plan for your next day? Start your plan.

Paul Meier said this, “Attitudes are nothing more than habits of thought, and habits can be acquired. An action repeated becomes an attitude realized”. Wow!

6. Renewal
Finally, we’ve come to the last step of changing an attitude. This is where you change everything including your thinking and mind. Take full control of it and you can be sure you are on the victory side over your bad habits and attitude!
